Powered Living is owned and directed by Helen Richards (Nelson based) in association with Roger Walker Architects (Wellington based).Click to see photo of Helen and Roger. We operate primarily from the Nelson office in conjunction with our recently established Auckland branch. We are a small specialised team and have a number of selected contractors also available to provide advice on engineering, building, landscaping, lighting and alternative power for Nelson and selected other regions. Helen Richards is a member of the Royal Institute of British Architects and in her 19 years of study and practise she has paid particular interest to energy efficiency; a passion to which she has dedicated a lot of her own time. After she settled in New Zealand in 2000 she set up her company Powered Living Ltd primarily to focus on environmentally smart architecture. The company is working on a variety of solar design projects and also with their patented Powered Living Concept house (see ‘The Designs’ page). The Nelson house is the demonstration for this and for passive solar design. It was completed in March 2004. The house has since proven the theories on solar performance; temperatures have not sunk below 16 degrees in midwinter with no form of back up heating and as a result has been generating much publicity (refer to our Publicity page). We are also proud to hold the first ever ‘excellent’ rating under the BRANZ (Building Research Authority NZ) ‘Green Home Scheme’ and to have been a finalist in the new ‘Year of the Built Environment’ Awards 2006. |

Roger Walker is a member of the New Zealand Institute of Architects. He is based in Wellington where he has been practising for 40 years. His inspiringly unique architecture is dotted all over Wellington cityscape and is the reason for the architectural awards he has won and the reputation that often precedes him! He is now exploring the possibilities of employing energy saving principles in his architectural practise. Helen and Roger are able to work on Wellington based projects either under the umbrella of Roger Walker Architects or Powered Living Ltd. The Powered Living Auckland branch is operated by Duncan Firth and Milti Stefadouros. They are members of the New Zealand Institute of Architects and have Bachelor of Architecture degrees (UNITEC Institute of Technology). Duncan and Milti both share a similar passion that incorporates passive solar design and energy efficient architecture with style. Environment, people, detail and technology are their generators for architecture. They are now working with the Powered Living Concept house design and other solar projects. These environmental homes are the future. They benefit you and the environment. You will be protected from climate extremes and be independent of any energy used for heating and cooling your home (depending on location, and including water - which ranges from $1 to $5 per day depending on time of year).
